Decorative Accent Tile:
“The essence of interior design will always be about people and how they live. It is about the realities of what makes for an attractive, civilized, meaningful environment, not about fashion or what’s in or what’s out. This is not an easy job.” Albert Hadley (The Story of America’s Preeminent Interior Designer)
PORCELAIN & CERAMIC TILE
Porcelain tiles are composed of fine porcelain clay and fired at much higher temperatures than ceramic tiles. This process makes porcelain tile more dense, less porous, much harder and less prone to moisture and stain absorption than ceramic tiles…
NATURAL STONE
There is no other material on Earth like it. Formed from millions of years of geologic forces, natural stone is quarried from all over the globe to make its way into our everyday lives in the form of counter tops, floor tiles and many other building materials…
CARE & MAINTENANCE
By following some basic care instructions, you should be able to keep your tile and natural stone looking as beautiful as the day you installed it. Tile care instructions differ slightly, depending on whether the tile is installed inside or outside as flooring or wall covering…

Decorative tile is an overly used term to describe a tile installed to make a focal statement in a space. Decorative tiles allow you to select a specific tile material, color, texture and shape and lay them out in a multitude of patterns to create a piece of decorative art in your home. Whether you’ve narrowed your search or you’re not sure where to start, our team can help you choose the right tile for the space in which it will be laid; as well as the design aspect of the decorative tile space. There is no specific material, size or color that really defines decorative tile/s; instead it is a result of combination of sizes, textures and colors that create a decorative or featured area in your home or commercial space. At San Diego Marble & Tile we have a huge selection of durable porcelain tile, glass tile, metal, backsplash tile, mosaic tile, natural stone and ceramic tiles in all shapes and sizes – You’ll be sure to find the perfect decorative tile.
Today, these are some of the main types of material used in decorative tiles:
Glass Tile
Glass tiles have evolved significantly over the years. There are really 2 main types of glass tiles, those infused with color and those with a color “foil” on the back. The infused glass is usually more expensive as they are more color consistent, however the price of glass tile can vary greatly. Glass tile is a great alternative for pool tile option due to its beautiful color and iridescent nature, just make sure to get pool rated glass tile.
Concrete Tile
The classic Moroccan style, with its intricate patterns, are glazed on concrete tiles. These offer a uniqueness as each tile is not 100% identical but you definitely must consider that concrete tiles are porous and hence they need to be sealed and/or maintained regularly. This type of tile offers a beautiful touch to any home with a broad range of color options and slight differences from tile to tile making these truly unique once installed. These concrete tiles are good for use inside or outside your home, but staining and small cracks should be expected over time as this is what gives them character and a part of this tile construction. If this is not something you want to see or can accept, then we recommend using other decorative tile materials.
Ceramic & Porcelain Tile
These are the most durable of tiles, although glazed ceramic tile is usually best suited for wall applications due to it being prone to chipping (this is not such a big issue in low-traffic areas like laundry room etc.) Ceramic tile offers bright and rich color options while being softer in density than Porcelain Tile, which makes it a great option for colorful decorative tiles in small sizes. Porcelain Tile is dense in nature but offers a more limited range in depth of color richness. Porcelain tiles are often cut into smaller and sometimes interesting shapes and mesh mounted as a mosaic. These Porcelain Tile Mosaics are widely used in combination with larger field tiles as a decorative tile to highlight a feature or section of your space.
Metal Tile
Metal tiles are generally more expensive and are usually used as specific accent pieces inside and even outside in both homes and commercial spaces. They can provide an ultra modern atmosphere or a very antique feel depending on the metal and finish. There are quite a few options to choose from in copper, bronze, stainless steel and other common metals in both matte and glossy finishes.
Natural Stone Tile
The decorative options available with natural stone are also endless and have the same benefits and maintenance requirements as standard natural stone tile for floors and walls. There is laser-cut mosaics, hand assembled patterns with tumbled natural stones, etc. The possibilities really can go as far as your imagination can take you.
